Android class with - Gary Smith

8/10Android class with - Gary Smith
I will be teaching Android how to install and uninstall apps and how to move apps from Main Memory to SD Card Memory.
If time permits I'll take general questions at end of the hour

Android App Management
GTCC August 10, 2016 – Gary Smith

Here’s the most important thing I’ve learned since I bought my first Android device.  Always buy the most (largest) amount of internal memory that you can afford.  In my opinion 32 gigs of internal memory should be your minimum but more is always better.  I’ve also learned that it’s best if you have your camera save it’s pictures and videos to your SD memory card.  Not only does that leave more space on the critical device main memory but also makes it easy to remove the SD card and copy it to your computer.

Finding New Apps  (Applications)
1. Locate the Google Play Store on your Home Screen.
2. After selecting the Play Store type what you’re looking for in the search bar.
3. For our example we’re going to type Joann.  You’ll get a “hit” on Jo-Ann Stores app. Select that app and then select “Install.” (When I’m searching for an app I usually read some of the reviews to give me a feeling about whether this is what I’m looking for.  In this case, my wife likes the coupons that Jo-Ann’s gives to users of their app.  If I’m shopping with her we have instant double coupons.)
4. Google Play will give you a list of things the App can access on your device. Click “Accept unless one of the “permissions” it asks for really makes you suspicious of the author’s intentions.
5. The App will download and Install. Next is a screen that allows you to Open the App or Uninstall the App.  Click “Open.”

Uninstalling Apps
1. On your Home Screen locate your Settings Icon which is the gear symbol.
2. On the top Menu select “General” which is usually on the right hand side.
3. Locate the “Device Manager” section and then click on “Application Manager.”  The Application Manager will list all of your Downloaded Apps.
4. Scroll through your list until you find the App you’d like to uninstall.  Click it and then click (select)  “Uninstall.”
5. Repeat this for any other Apps you’d like to Uninstall.  There are some Apps that shipped with your Device and they can’t be uninstalled.  The Uninstall button will be grayed out if that’s the case.
Moving Apps to SD Card memory
The very newest Android devices access memory differently than our older devices.  Older devices have to have the Apps loaded into Main Device Memory. Newer Android devices can access the SD card and read it as if it was Main Memory. On our older devices we can move some, but not all, of an Apps data to the SD card memory.
Open Settings, then General, then Application Manager just like we did above.Locate the “Device Manager” section and then click on “Application Manager.”  The Application Manager will list all of your Downloaded Apps.
1. Locate the box that reads: Move to SD Card
2. Click or Select that box and wait while your Device moves as much of the App to the SD card as it can.  You’ll get a message that it’s done moving.  After the data has been moved the Selection box will read “Move to Device Storage.”
3. Some Apps can’t be moved to the SD card and the “Move” box will be grayed out.
4. After the move is complete your device will show you that part of the App is on your main memory and part has been moved to your SD memory.

HOW TO BACKUP YOUR WINDOWS 7 COMPUTER

HOW TO BACK UP WINDOWS 7
Link to Jep’s page: http://www.florenceelks.com/#!backup/c97q

(Manually, not using Windows Backup and Restore)

Open your backup HD and create a new folder. Name it whatever you like, maybe

something like “Backup_(date).” Minimize the new folder so it is handy for you to

use.

(To get your backup HD, open Computer and look for your external HD.

On your desktop you will see a user file icon with Your Name or User or Owner. If it

is not on the desktop, go to Computer > C drive > Users > Your Name or User or

Owner.

Click on it and Open.

With 7’s new organization, it is easy to back up all of the essential folders. If you

only want to save certain ones, it can be done that way.

To backup all in the folder (recommended):

o Click on Edit and Select All

o Right Click on one of the selected folders and Copy

o Maximize your backup folder, Right Click and Paste.

Or, from Jep’s instructions:

o Click on Organize and Select All

o Click on Organize again and Copy

o Maximize the backup folder, click on Organize and Paste.

To backup selected folders (recommended: Documents, Favorites, Desktop)

o Hold down CTRL and select each folder you want to back up.

o Right Click on one of the selected folders (I always use the last one selected

because I’m right there) and Copy.

o Maximize your back up folder, Right Click and Paste.

Or, from Jep’s instructions:

o Select the folder/s you want to back up (CTRL and click on the folder/s).

o Click on Organize and Copy

o Maximize the backup folder, click on Organize and Paste.

8/6/2014- hand out for gtcc

by Dale

MINT: A FANTASTIC RESOURCE FOR USE ON YOUR WAY TO BECOMING A PROFICIENT LINUX MINT USER.
The book "INTRODUCTION TO LINUX, A HANDS ON GUIDE" is free and looks like a very good reference for us all. I have not read much of it, but I certainly plan to. Access it by going to: http://linuxquestions.tradepub.com/free/w_mach01/
MANY GOOD WEBSITES FOR HELP DOWNLOADING MINT 13 AND 17, SUCH AS:

WILL YOUR OLD COMPUTER HANDLE?
MINT 13: System requirements:
Processor: Pentium 4  1,4 Ghz
RAM memory: 512 MB
Video card: 32 MB
Hard disk space: 10 GB
MINT 17: System requirements:
  • x86 processor (Linux Mint 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. Linux Mint 32-bit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors).
  • 512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 10 GB of disk space
  • DVD drive or USB port
GOOD INFO FOR INSTALLING MINT 13:

TO PARTITION YOUR HARD DRIVE, SUCH AS:
Note: unless you are an old hand at partitioning hard drives, I suggest you read this information and act on whatever information therein you deem to be useful to you. Partition your hard drive according to how much you anticipate using the two different OSs in the future. Probably, Mint 17 should have 20 MB to allow for future storage. I suggest you store your pictures on a separate external hard drive and back them up on a second hard drive that is  not carried around with you as you travel. The Mint install process has its own hard drive partitioning program but you might have more control over the partition size process if you use the one above.

PROBABLY THE BEST DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS:
CHECK OUT THE MINT DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS ON JEP’S 'GREENTREES' WEBSITE ALSO!

SOME THINGS TO DO AFTER INSTALLING MINT 17

USE WINE (INSTALL WINE BEFORE TRYING TO ADD PROGRAMS)
Probably best to download Wine from within Mint 17, but here is more info:
USE THE MINT SEARCH PROGRAM TO SEE IF AN MS PROGRAM YOU LIKE IS AVAILABLE TO USE WITH WINE:  http://appdb.winehq.org/

GTCC - search tool

HERE IS A TOOL (PROGRAM)
TO SEARCH YOUR COMPUTER AND DISK DRIVES

This program came from
GOOGLE DESK TOP
(google no longer supports this for widgets)
But as a search engine, it is excellent

You can down load it here

this will find anything on your hard disk - fast-
try it,
hit the control key two times
(to open the search window)

and see what you find:
type in a name
type in a photo number
a little text
it will show you where you have lost something on your computer

You might want to try it first, at GTCC lab
go to  the #1
XP machine by the TV
or
the #4
 WIN7 machine by the door

I only let it search the computer files,
widgets, and emails are not enabled

this is the best search program I know of
 for WIN machines
